Meliai says GoT is totes for the ladies as much as it is for the men. And, okay, I know a lot of ladies who like it, and even though I’ve heard it’s super rapey, I’ll probably watch it at some point when I have access, but I don’t have HBO right now so there’s not much I can do. I’ve seen some sweet fan art of that one lady being awesome. So I can’t argue either way on that one.

My real issue is that all the shows I mentioned are liked by people of all genders, even though they are arguably made more for men. Whereas even a lady who doesn’t generally like lady specific things like myself has to qualify liking a series like Grey’s Anatomy because it’s a “chick” show. I mean, I like some of the shows I mentioned. That doesn’t mean there’s not a sexism problem with those shows, or with most shows. Hell, BSG tried to do a good job, and the gay representation is bad and unrealistic. If I only liked things that weren’t sexist or otherwise oppressing, I’d like pretty much nothing, and I like things, so obviously there’s some leeway. Just saying, it’s not cool that I feel weird about admitting I like Grey’s Anatomy.

I’ve decided to not apologize for liking Grey’s Anatomy or call it a guilty pleasure. Yeah, it’s dramatic and ridiculous, but no more so than shows that people think are serious and okay to like (basically, shows about and/or made for dudes, which are automatically seen as more serious and worthy: Mad Men, for example, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and I haven’t seen any of it, but I’m going to go out on a very short limb and say Game of Thrones). And there are all these strong women who are the most main characters, which is great! Also, it’s been really interesting watching old episodes on Netflix while taking Bioethics, because 90% of the things we talked about came up as issues on the show.

So, without apology for my tastes this time, unlike the other times I’ve posted about being annoyed with characters on Grey’s, I’ve got to say: Arizona has been a real jerk lately.

While I was editing my cover letter template and trying to figure out a list of people to send it to, my Federal Income Tax of Trusts and Estates professor e-mailed me out of the blue to ask if I’d be interested in being his research assistant.

Now, I know I also need to get some firm experience before I graduate, but I’m hoping that he’s not going to need 40 hours from me, and I can ask him if he knows anyone who might want some help during the rest of my time, since he is an expert in the field I am interested in. I don’t think that’s unreasonable, and I don’t think there is anyone in a better position to help me out.

He is also one of my favorite professors. In the top 2, in fact, and the other is an Equal Protection expert, which is not really helpful to me as fascinating as that area is. He’s not super warm and I used to think he didn’t like me so I was too scared to go to his office hours. I hear he’s actually quite nice, though awkward, once you get to know him, so I’m going to make sure we are bffs before the end of the summer.

I’m meeting with him tomorrow at 2, so hopefully by 3 or so my whole life will be figured out.

Taking a break. Alternating between confidence that I can finish and do well and terror that I can’t (19 hours but I’d like to finish and exchange with a friend in 15).

To do list for the rest of the week: celebrate with friends, take Indie to the lake with some beer (hope Mike can come too), send 20+ cover letters, read a whole book for pleasure, ride my bike for the first time in 3 weeks (I’m signed up to ride 50 miles in a charity ride but that distance is definitely not happening). I can’t wait! Just have to make it to tomorrow evening.

Today I just had a new fun life plan idea. Use my mother’s connections to get an estate planning job in Virginia for a couple years. Live cheaply (possibly with my parents for a while, which might not be so terrible if I have a job), pay down loans a bit, save up some money, get some experience. Use experience to land job in Seattle. Not have to pay for Ll.M. Alternatively, go for Ll.M. at UW if no one will give a VA girl with a Texas degree a job, but be in better financial position than if I went straight through, and with more experience with which to leverage a job afterwards.

Not as fun as going straight to Seattle, but it might be cool to take a break from school for awhile, and be able to easily visit East Coast friends and relatives before I leave for the West Coast forever. Plus, even though I don’t want to end up there, Virginia sure is beautiful and I wouldn’t mind a little more time spent there.

I think maybe I’ll apply for jobs in both places next year.

And now back to this huge paper that’s due in 24 hours!!!

Which means I will be done with 2L year in 24 hours! Then I just have to convince someone to give me a summer job/unpaid internship. No problem, hopefully.

Of course, after not showing up last month due to stress, my period had to hit me like a ton of bricks right after I picked up this really difficult take home final. It didn’t really show up last month because of stress, and it’s like it’s trying to make up for that by being twice as miserable as normal.

IT’S BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO DISPOSABLE INCOME YOU THUNDERING IDIOTS. Fucking preference has nothing to do with it. 50% of college graduates have no job! They all have the most student loan debt ever! What are you asking this question for?!

Also: housing is a good bit more expensive now.

My parents got a 15-year mortgage on a new house in the mid-70s. The house was $32,000. Average home price in that area now? $190,000.

So, home prices went up. Food prices went up. Health care prices went WAY UP. Rent prices went up. Higher education went up so damn high that some of us forgo that all together. Energy prices went up. Car prices went up.

Prices of prices went up.

We also pay cell phone bills, internet bills, data plans, text plans, online subscriptions, cable/satellite tv, netflix, DVR subscriptions — bills that didn’t even exist 30-40 years ago. We also use computers and smartphones and microwaves and other consumer electronics that didn’t exist 20-50 years ago.

We need medications and doctors and contact lenses and tampons and maxi pads and other things that cost money just to be alive and keep us healthy.

Most of us can’t afford to:

Get married and have a “Traditional” big wedding

Buy a house

Buy a new car

PLAN to have children

Take two, consecutive weeks of vacation.

Jobs that paid 50k in the late 1990s now pay between 30-35. Interest rates that favor consumers have gone down.

So I say, no. We are not choosing not to buy homes. We’re not choosing to take the bus in cities where there’s no good public transit. WE ARE NOT CHOOSING TO LIVE WHAT SOCIETY DEEMS AS AN UNDESIRABLE LIFESTYLE.

Don’t even get me started on the fact that these two people in the picture are young white hipsters. Young black and brown folks have been forgoing homeownership and buying new cars for decades, this shit isn’t new, pal. You’re just acting like this shit is new because it’s hitting white folks.

anyway, my point is: We are fucking broke.
